With his direction, the MDP program has expanded Emory’s network of strategic partnerships with leading international development organizations, including CARE, Oxfam and Heifer International, as well as federal agencies such as the U.S. Agency for International Development. Last summer, MDP sent students abroad for 10-week field practicums with 21 organizations in 25 countries. Nugent is also the co-principal investigator of the Communities of Practice initiative at Emory’s Laney Graduate School, which began this fall. Funded by a grant from the Henry Luce Foundation, the pilot program aims to better incorporate global skills into doctoral education. Professor Nugent has greatly contributed to the academic environment of Emory University and is incredibly admired and loved by each of students.
“It has been an honor to have Dr. Nugent not only as the Director of MDP but also as one of our professors. I have learned to think analytically about development and the obstacles that we will face as development practitioners. I’m so grateful for having him as a professor”. - Maria Guzman, Emory MDP ‘17
Nugent began his research career in the northern Peruvian Andes, where he studied regional patterns of economic growth and stagnation. Over the course of three decades, he has also conducted field research on the impact of land privatization on farming communities in Kenya, the environmental management practices of Inuit people in the Canadian arctic, and indigenous land and water rights in the western United States.
“There are very few people that I know who care about the wellbeing of others regardless of race, finances, and social status as much as Nugent. I’m glad that this award can be an outlet to appreciate all the hard work we (MDP students) witness him accomplish every week on campus.” -Adza Beda, Emory MDP ‘17
