MDP Task Force sponsors Green Water panel

GDTF

Together with the Center for Global Safe Water (CGSW) and the newly organized Global Development Task Force (GDTF), the Emory MDP student organization co-sponsored an expert panel on “Green Water: Examining Health, Human Rights, and Business Impacts of Water Privatization” in celebration of World Water Day, on March 22, 2014.  MDP year student Kate Jackson, President of the Global Development Task Force (GDTF), introduced the speaker, Dr. Mark LeChevallier, Director of Innovation and Environmental Stewardship at American Water, the largest publicly traded water and wastewater utility company in the US. Last year, LeChevallier received the prestigious Research Innovation Award from the Water Research Foundation. The speaker offered a key note presentation on the different modalities of private-public partnership that fit different water system context and the advantages of privatization in terms of innovation, sustainability, and accountability. The presentation was followed by comments by each of the panelists and by an active discussion based on questions from the audience and moderated by MDP Director Prof. David Nugent. The panel included a diversity of perspectives, including public health (by CGSF Director, Prof. Christine Moe), law (Ms. Atieno Samandari), and business (Prof. Wes Longhhofer). Dr. Moe broadened the scope to include the specific challenges of introducing privatized water systems in low-resource settings in the Global South. Ms Samandari brought it down to the specific case study of the implications of formalizing water access for rural communities in Kenya. Dr Longhofer addressed issues of corporate social responsibility and emphasized the importance of understanding contextual factors as we assess examples of water privatization on a global scale. Several MDP students, members of the GDTF, helped organized the event, including Lauren Godfrey, who chaired the event, Nathan Kennedy, Fallon Frappier, Sarah Harlan, Morgan Mercer, Sam Collins, Amihan Jones, and Caitlin McColloch.
