Student Spotlight: Ordy Gnewou

 

Ordy Manuela Gnewou is a fourth-year PhD candidate in chemistry with a biochemistry concentration at Laney Graduate School. Gnewou says she chose to study at Laney based on its openness and support of its graduate students wanting to pursue careers outside of academia, as well as its breadth of collaboration, allowing for a multidisciplinary research approach... The Secret Syllabus of Grad School

Does it feel like everyone else has a guide to grad school and you're just making things up as you go along? Many parts of grad school—especially key "transition" moments—have unspoken expectations (a “hidden curriculum”) that can be hard to decipher. Join Stanford Professor Tom Mullaney as he discusses two pivotal grad school transitions: the transition from coursework to dissertation research, and from "PhD Candidate" to "Early-Career Scholar" status.

2022 Pride Awards

The Office of LGBT Life invites you to attend the Annual Pride Awards . This event celebrates the achievements of LGBTQ students, faculty, staff, alumni, and community members, while also commemorating the campus-wide protest that took place on March 2, 1992. The awards showcase the great work many people do behind the scenes for LGBTQ equality on Emory’s campus and on behalf of the Emory community.

New! Spring into Wellness: Solutions-Focused Approaches to Supporting Graduate Mental Health and Wellbeing

Meghan Duffy, Professor at the University of Michigan and first author of a recent article entitled “Supporting Mental Health and Productivity Within Labs,” will give a talk on this topic in the biology seminar series. This session is open to all graduate students. It is sponsored by Emory Department of Biology, Population Biology Ecology and Evolution (PBEE) Graduate Program, Emory Department of Chemistry and the Hightower Fund.

New! LGS-BLUE BBQ

Diversity and community are important to Laney Graduate School. That is why LGS-EDGE (Emory Diversifying Graduate Education) is launching a new group: LGS-BLUE ( Black Men at Laney United in Excellence). In the last few years, LGS has seen an increase in Black male enrollment in Laney. EDGE and LGS-BLUE aim to connect and promote community among Black and brown, male-identifying graduate students through various social, academic, and professional activities.

 

Our first event of the year will be a meet-n-greet with other grad students who would like to affiliate with the group. Be prepared to just kick back, relax, and enjoy some good BBQ. Beverages (wine and beer) will also be served. If you identify as male and black/brown please stop by! Share this opportunity with your colleagues!

 

This is the first of many groups that will really focus on intersecting identities among our diverse student body, so stay tuned!

New! LGS-EDGE and the Office of LGBT Life Present: ' Introduction to LGBTQ+ Allyship'

Join LGS-EDGE and the Office of LGBT Life for an engaging conversation! Facilitated by Danielle Bruce-Steele , Director of LGBT Life, and Jackie Veliz , Program Coordinator for LGBT Life, this workshop will focus on pronouns, gender, gender expression, sexual orientation, and how to be an ally to those who identify as part of the LGBT community. It is designed for all students and provides a safe space to ask questions and learn.

New! Dissertation Bootcamp

Dissertation Bootcamp sessions are a chance for students working on their dissertations to join others for some structured writing time and shared accountability. Each session will have breaks and time for reflection built in, and we will mostly run consecutive "pomodoro" sessions. Of course, we're flexible. If attendees decide we want some free-writing time, or want to partner up for mutual feedback, we will do so.

Career Coaching Drop-in Session with Dr. Ariela Freedman

Need help navigating grad school or figuring out what’s next? If so, we invite you to join our March career coaching drop-in session! Our career coach, Dr. Ariela Freedman, will be available to provide advice on navigating graduate school and planning for your career. You may submit questions in advance or ask them on the fly! This is a drop-in session, so you can come in at any time. The session will not be recorded, so the conversation will remain private.

Emory Institute for Healthcare Improvement Case Competition

Emory’s Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI) invites graduate students to participate in the inaugural IHI case competition. Emory and Georgia Tech graduate students are challenged to think critically and present innovative solutions to a real-world healthcare problem with a chance to win cash. Students can sign-up as a pre-formed team or can sign up as an individual for placement on a team.

Graduate Student Writing Group

Are you working on a writing project? If so, our group can help you get it done, 25 minutes at a time. Join our weekly graduate student writing group (online via Zoom) for some dedicated writing time (through multiple pomodoros, i.e. focused writing intervals) as well as the opportunity to obtain feedback from a writing tutor if desired. Woodruff Health Sciences Center seeks a graduate student for a part-time Editorial Assistant for a new journal focused on the education of health professionals. Let’s Talk is an informal, free, and confidential consultation service that allows students to speak with a clinician and receive support for any challenge they may be experiencing. Although Let’s Talk consultants are mental health professionals, these  consultations are not mental health treatment but can be used to receive short-term support and resources.

Piedmont TATTO Fellowship

Applications are now open for the Piedmont TATTO Fellowship on Sustainability and Curriculum Development. This interdisciplinary program is open to graduate students in all disciplines and professional programs who want to expand their teaching repertoire around sustainability, environmental, and social justice issues.

Berlin Graduate Exchange Student Program

The Laney Graduate School maintains a graduate student exchange program with the Freie Universität Berlin (FUB). The program seeks to promote strong academic and cultural ties between the two institutions. One student may be selected to represent Emory at the FUB for the 2022-23 academic year (October 1, 2022 - July 31, 2023). Selection is based on a competitive process.
