Featured Event: Brian Shields Inaugural Lecture in Institutional Ethics: Big Pharma’s War on Whistleblowers

Bringing together a lawyer (Jeb White), a former pharmaceutical marketer and Emory alum (Brian Shields), and a physician (William DeLacorte) who have been involved in whistleblowing suits against pharmaceutical companies that have recovered hundreds of millions of dollars for the U.S. government, this panel moderated by the Director of the Emory Center for Ethics (Paul Root Wolpe) will explore ethical and interpersonal issues in whistleblowing.

The focus of the panel is on ethical issues in both pharmaceutical marketing and research that arise due to conflicts of interest and profit-seeking behavior. It explores whistleblowing as a legally supported process that can address ethical issues at both individual and institutional levels and the way an Emory University alumnus used this process against their employer and a physician used this process against an external pharmaceutical company.

Interested students can apply to work with one of our community partner organizations to assist with ongoing research projects or to develop skills through internship experience.

We encourage eligible students to apply to these opportunities as an opportunity to engage projects related to their own research, explore new areas of public scholarship, or simply expand their public humanities experiences and skills.
