James T. Laney School of Graduate Studies Names 2022 – 2023 Kharen Fulton Award for Diversity, Inclusion, and Community Engagement

Sandra Mendiola, a PhD student in the Population Biology, Ecology, and Evolution (PBEE) program, was recognized for ‘herculean’ efforts to promote diversity, inclusion at Emory University.

From the moment Sandra Mendiola, a PhD student in Population Biology, Ecology, and Evolution (PBEE), arrived on campus at Emory University in 2017, she started working to create more equitable spaces in her department, her program, her university, and her field.

Last week, Laney Graduate School (LGS) recognized Mendiola’s efforts by naming her the winner of the 2022 – 2023 Kharen Fulton Award for Diversity, Inclusion, and Community Engagement in Graduate Education.

Reminder: Emory University international travel policy requires all Emory-sponsored international travel to be approved by the student’s school of enrollment. For LGS students, all Emory-related international travel, regardless of funding source (e.g., PDS award, program funding, etc.), MUST be approved through the LGS International Travel Permission Form.

New! Morphing a Continuing Writing Class into a Continuing Communication Class

Beginning in Fall Semester 2023, students in the undergraduate program at Emory will be required to take two Continuing Communication classes.This GER is beyond the first-year writing requirement and is designed to give further practice in various modes of communication (including writing) within a content area or discipline. Integrating communication instruction and scaffolding into a course with heavy content is challenging! If you are planning on teaching a communication-intensive class in the future or just want to tweak the writing-intensive one you are already teaching, join us for this workshop. Handouts/resources will be provided. Plenty of time will be given for discussion and sharing ideas and questions about your classes. Examples of modified syllabi and information about going through the approval process for your class will be presented.

Develop and Edit Your Diversity Statement Workshop – Part 2

A diversity statement is a common requirement for both academic and non-academic job applications. This workshop will focus on diversity statements as part of academic job application materials but will also be useful for students planning to apply for jobs outside of academia.

Students will bring their diversity statement drafts to Part Two of the workshop and will delve into strategies for revising them to best reflect their past and future contributions.

New! Brian Shields Inaugural Lecture in Institutional Ethics: Big Pharma’s War on Whistleblowers

Bringing together a lawyer (Jeb White), a former pharmaceutical marketer and Emory alum (Brian Shields), and a physician (William DeLacorte) who have been involved in whistleblowing suits against pharmaceutical companies that have recovered hundreds of millions of dollars for the U.S. government, this panel moderated by the Director of the Emory Center for Ethics (Paul Root Wolpe) will explore ethical and interpersonal issues in whistleblowing. 

The focus of the panel is on ethical issues in both pharmaceutical marketing and research that arise due to conflicts of interest and profit-seeking behavior. It explores whistleblowing as a legally supported process that can address ethical issues at both individual and institutional levels and the way an Emory University alumnus used this process against their employer and a physician used this process against an external pharmaceutical company.

Doctoral students attending this session will receive JPE 610 credit. Those seeking JPE 610 credit must register by November 15. When registering you must choose the JPE ticket type and provide the information required. You will be asked to show ID and sign in on arrival. You must stay for the entirety of the program to receive JPE 610 credit.

New! Black Studies Collective to Host Dissertation Write-In

Working on your dissertation? Need to tidy up a prospectus? Join the Black Studies Collective for a one-day writing event. All students working on a dissertation that intersects with the Black/African diaspora are welcome! We will work for three hours using the Pomodoro method. Refreshments will be provided.

New! LGS Dean December Office Hours

LGS Dean Kimberly Jacob Arriola is hosting office hours each month for LGS students. All LGS students are welcome – just come to the Dean’s Office (Administration Building, Suite 202) during office hours, sign in upon arrival, and you’ll be able to meet with the Dean individually. The Dean will meet with students in order of arrival. We will offer light refreshments in the office while you wait.

Foreign Policy for America's NextGen Initiative is a premier network of next generation foreign policy leaders (between ages of 21-35 years old) committed to advancing principled American engagement in the world. NextGen members have access to tailored mentorship initiatives and an extraordinary network of members and advisors.

Mellon Interventions Student Interventions Grants: Internship Supplements 

Laney Graduate School and the Fox Center for Humanistic Inquiry invite eligible Emory PhD students in the humanities and humanistically oriented social sciences to apply for Internship Supplements for the Spring 2023 semester. We plan to support Ph.D. students through a $2,000 internship supplement to their stipends. Students will take GRAD 705 while interning with a community partner (6-8 hours a week). Interested students can apply to work with one of our community partner organizations to assist with ongoing research projects or to develop skills through internship experience.

We encourage eligible students to apply to these opportunities as an opportunity to engage projects related to their own research, explore new areas of public scholarship, or simply expand their public humanities experiences and skills. Awardees will participate in a mid-semester check-in with the Mellon Interventions team and complete a GRAD705 Experience Completion Report with additional Public Humanities- focused content.

New! Join the LGSA’s FIFA 2022 World Cup Challenge

You are invited to join the Latinx Graduate Student Associate (LGSA) for their FIFA 2022 World Cup Challenge! LGSA has curated an interactive bracket experience where participants can compete in a challenge with members of our Emory community. Any brackets that have been created in the Emory University LGSA 2022 pool will be listed once the tournament begins, along with current and maximum possible score updates at the end of every match.

LGSA will award prizes for the top 3 brackets by the end of the World Cup (limit 1 entry per person).

New! Laura Bassi Scholarship

The Laura Bassi Scholarship was established by Editing Press in 2018 with the aim of providing editorial assistance to postgraduates and junior academics whose research focuses on neglected topics of study, broadly construed. The scholarships are open to every discipline and the next round of funding will be awarded in Winter 2022.

LGS-PDCP Career Coaching Program – Fall 2022 Availability

We are excited to announce that our career coaching program has a limited number of appointments available this semester for graduate students who wish to think through their career planning with a professional coach! 

LGS Writing Group

Are you working on a writing project? If so, our supportive community of writers can help you get it done! Join our weekly graduate student writing group for two hours of dedicated writing time (using the pomodoro method) as well as the opportunity to obtain feedback from a Writing Center graduate tutor or an English Language Specialist, if desired. Come for 1 week or come for them all.

Let's Talk! Drop in Consultations for Emory Graduate & Professional Students

Let's Talk is an informal, free, confidential consultation service that allows graduate and professional students to speak with a clinician and receive support for any challenge they may be experiencing. Let's Talk is not a substitute for formal counselling but can be used to receive short-term support and resources.

Students will meet 1:1 for a 15-20 minute video or phone consultation with their CAPS consultant.

International Day of Service 

Join up with other international students and alumni as we participate in the 2022 Emory Cares Day of Service. Laney Graduate School international students, faculty and alumni will work together to plant native shrubs to restore the woodland growth in Emory's own Lullwater Preserve. Children over 10 are welcome. Gardening tools will be provided. Project Lead is Heather Boldt, hboldt@emory.edu.

International Community Friday Lunch (ICFL) 

International Community Friday Lunch (ICFL) is a long-standing collaboration between the Office of Spiritual and Religious Life (OSRL) and International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS). The purpose of this gathering is to extend a warm welcome and build a community for international students and scholars while enjoying free lunch!   

ICFL occurs on Fridays from 11:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. in Cannon Chapel Brooks Commons. Meals are limited; therefore, please RSVP in advance for each week you will attend. 

Virginia Tech Presidential Postdoctoral Fellowship Program Expands

Virginia Tech's Presidential Postdoctoral Fellowship program has expanded to include four distinct tracks and opportunities. This program seeks to broadly prepare postdocs for the next step in their careers, providing a two-year appointment with nationally competitive salaries and benefits.

Postdoctoral fellows selected for the program will receive:

• Two-year appointments with nationally competitive salaries and benefits
• $10,000 for training and professional development-related expenses
• Mentoring and professional development support

Azrieli International Postdoctoral Fellowship: Applications Now Open

The Azrieli International Postdoctoral Fellowship supports the best and brightest minds in their postdoctoral research, connecting them with world-class academics and leading researchers. The Fellowship provides generous funding for eligible international applicants to conduct research in any academic discipline at eligible institutions in Israel. Azrieli International Postdoctoral Fellowships are awarded without regard to religion, gender, age, or ethnicity.

The fellowship – now open to applicants from around the globe – offers funding of approximately EUR 58,000 (ILS 188,000) for 24 postdocs per year. 

Applications must be submitted by November 15, 2022.
