Effective Mentor/Mentee Communication
In celebration of National Mentor Month, the Laney student affairs team will host a hybrid workshop open to all LGS students on "Effective Mentor/Mentee Communication" facilitated by Nicole Gerardo, PhD, professor, Department of Biology, Emory University and director, graduate Division of Biological and Biomedical Sciences (GDBBS).
Gerardo is passionate about mentoring and will guide students in fostering productive and supportive relationships with their mentors.
The workshop will cover:
- Making a mentor match
- Understanding the difference between an advisor and a mentor
- Enhancing the relationship with your advisor/PI
- Seeking out additional mentors within your community

3 Weeks to Go for 3MT !
The countdown is on for the Three Minute Thesis (3MT) and the Master's Showcase competition at Laney Graduate School. This competition challenges graduate students to present their research in three minutes or less to a non-specialist audience.
With only three weeks remaining to submit a preliminary application, LGS students are encouraged to apply now. Three Minute Thesis and the Master's Showcase offers a unique platform for students to refine their communication skills, connect with faculty across disciplines, and compete for prizes.

Start Immediately! Seeking Student Workers for Career Pathways Project
The Laney Graduate School is seeking current PhD students for an initiative that will tracking the career trajectories of our doctoral program alumni.
Selected students will document the professional journeys of Laney PhD alumni, and create comprehensive employment histories that will inform graduate education and career development resources.
Beyond the hourly compensation, this position provides unique insights into the diverse career paths that PhD graduates pursue across academia, industry, government, and non-profit sectors.
Hours: 10/week
Compensation: $20/hr

Join the Spring 2025 LGS Graduate Writing Group
Effective writing is a vital skill for graduate students, and finding dedicated time and support can make all the difference.
The Spring 2025 LGS Graduate Writing Group provides an opportunity to focus on your writing in a structured and supportive environment. Whether you're drafting a paper, reading source materials, or working on tables and figures, the writing group offers both in-person and online options to help you stay on track and make significant progress.
Key Features:
- Dedicated Writing Time: Participate in multiple writing sprints to make progress on your writing projects, whether it's drafting, reading source materials, outlining, or working on tables/figures.
- Supportive Community: Connect with fellow graduate students who understand the challenges and triumphs of academic writing. Share experiences, tips, and encouragement.
- Feedback Opportunities: Get valuable feedback on your work from an Emory Writing Center Fellow or an English Language Specialist, if desired.

Writing in Bare Bones STEM
Interested in science communication? Writing in Bare Bones STEM is a great opportunity to gain experience writing in the sciences for a non-specialist audience and develop your communication skills. You will be asked to write a 500-word article either about research at Emory you find interesting or highlighting a successful woman in STEM at Emory. Articles will be published online at the end of the 2025 Spring Semester.

Make a Difference through Emory Impact Circle Funding
Through a donor-guided grant-making process, Emory Impact Circles raise money in support of philanthropic priorities that support women, African Americans and LGBTQ+ communities across the university.
Each year, more than $200, 000 in grant funding may be awarded through this process to seed academic and programmatic efforts that are important to the Atlanta community and beyond.
Current Emory employees or students are eligible to apply on behalf of departments, offices, programs, and/or registered student organizations.

ELSP Mini-Course: Advancing Your Graduate Writing Skills
This mini-course is designed to help multilingual graduate students refine their scholarly writing skills through:
- Focused sessions tailored to common writing challenges.
- Exploration of disciplinary writing conventions to better understand and meet the expectations in your field of study.
- Personalized feedback on your writing to help you develop as an academic writer.
- Introduction of tools and strategies for self-editing and continued improvement.
The course emphasizes practical application and individualized support to help students produce clear, effective, and well-organized writing.

New Workshop: Reframe Your Research - Shifting Perspectives on Your Data for New Insights
Led by Emory alum and executive coach, Nuri Jeong, PhD, and designed for international PhD students and postdoctoral fellows, this interactive workshop shows researchers how to analyze their data from the perspective of key stakeholders, such as employers, advisors, and grant reviewers. Participants will receive peer feedback and discover new ways to refine and reframe their research for maximum impact. Lunch will also be served.
