Remembering Jimmy Carter
Honoring President Jimmy Carter’s Legacy
As the National Day of Mourning for President Jimmy Carter approaches on Thursday, January 9, the Emory community continues to reflect on his lasting connection to the university and the James T. Laney Graduate School.
Members of the Emory community are encouraged to honor President Carter’s legacy by attending memorial events at the Carter Presidential Center from January 4–7 or viewing the screening of the state funeral at Cannon Chapel at 10 a.m. on January 9. This moment offers an opportunity to reflect on President Carter’s profound contributions to Emory and the world.
President Carter’s appointment as University Distinguished Professor in 1982, during the presidency of James T. Laney, brought a globally renowned leader to Emory. This appointment strengthened ties to the Carter Presidential Library and Center and fostered impactful discussions on global affairs and social justice across campus.
