Save the Date: PhD NLRB Student Election scheduled October 17, 18.

 

What's Happening: Last week, eligible PhD students received an official notice of election, which contained important details about the upcoming NLRB election, including voting locations based on their program.

PhD Students eligible to vote by mail because they are performing in-unit services outside of the Atlanta Metropolitan area received an official notice that included how and when to complete the mail ballot and how to contact the NLRB's Regional Office if they did not receive a mail ballot.

Your Vote, Your Voice: We encourage all eligible students to vote to ensure a broad representation of PhD students on campus. Students can (and should) seek out a range of information from people they trust, including talking to peers, trusted advisors, and faculty.

EGHI/GT Climate Change Hackathon

 

The Emory Global Health Institute and Create-X at Georgia Tech are collaborating to host the EGHI/GT Climate Change Hackathon and we are seeking Emory students to join the competition! This is a hackathon and innovation challenge that provides Emory and GA Tech students an opportunity to create novel solutions to problems caused by Climate Change. The goal is for student teams to develop marketable products. We welcome and encourage undergraduate and graduate students from all majors and disciplines to participate!

 

All teams are made up of Emory and GA Tech students and we have channels built for competition participants to help find their teammates. All competition information, the registration form, and team finding resources can be found on the event website here. The winning team will receive $4,000 and the opportunity to enroll in Create-X Startup Launch.

Meet Alliance for Disability and Accessibility Promotion and Training (ADAPT)!

 

Join ADAPT, a graduate student-oriented disability advocacy group, for our very first meeting as an official student organization! We invite students to bring questions, advice, experiences, and unmet needs related to disability and accessibility at Emory. In addition to getting to know one another, we will share our findings from the needs assessments ADAPT conducted last year, discuss our next steps for on-campus advocacy work, and promote future events in the pipeline. 11th Annual Black Doctoral Network Conference Call for Entries

 

The Black Doctoral Network welcomes current graduate and doctoral students, students of professional degree programs (i.e. medical, law, dental, pharmacy), and postdoctoral scholars of all racial and ethnic backgrounds to participate in our poster session at the 11th Annual Black Doctoral Network Conference. The theme will be: "Setting a Legacy: The Impact of Successful Scholarship."

 

If you have a research project, thesis, or dissertation you would like to present as a poster at a professional conference, the poster session is a good opportunity to receive feedback from scholars in a friendly and engaging environment.

Graduate Student Interpersonal Process Group 

 

In order to bring together graduate students of all majors/degrees who may be needing additional support, we are hoping to facilitate a weekly space in-person at CAPS focusing on improving students’ interpersonal relationships (both personal and professional). Relationships are a key feature of good mental health (and are often at the core of our struggles – whether stress, depression, or anxiety).

 

Students will have the opportunity to share, build a sense of community, learn vicariously through others, give and receive support from their peers. In addition, there will be two mental health professionals co-facilitating the group.

 

Before joining: Students are asked to complete an initial phone consultation and initial screening prior to joining the group, and are welcome to contact the group facilitators if they have any questions or concerns.

Call for Applicants for the Nucleate Atlanta Activator Program

 

Nucleate is a nonprofit, student-led organization that provides accelerator-type programs to biotech startups and doesn't take equity or charge any fees.

We are looking for:
· PhD students or Postdocs who are interested in commercializing their tech idea, research, or invention
· Business or law students who can join a team and focus on creating the business model
· Medical students who can join a team and focus on the clinical side of the tech/invention

If you are a PhD student who has a business or medical background you are welcome to apply as a business or medical applicant! Students will be matched into teams where startup teams will be connected with relevant industry mentors and build skills in a series of workshops, culminating in a final pitch competition. Winning teams can win funding and lab space to forward their business creation.

Make Progress with the NCFDD 14-Day Writing Challenge!

 

Build accountability and strengthen your writing habit with the next 14-Day Writing Challenge hosted by the National Center for Faculty Development and Diversity (NCFDD).

 

The challenge is simple: write for at least 30 minutes every day - Monday through Friday - for two weeks. Writing, in this case, refers to any scholarly activity ranging from the spark of a new idea to polishing a near-complete project (article, dissertation, grant proposal, exhibit, book chapter, etc.).


Participation is free through Emory's institutional access to NCFDD.

The Hatchery Skills Builder Workshops

 

The Hatchery is hosting two Skills Builders workshops for students with an interest in innovation and entrepreneurship. These workshops are offered to students with a general interest in innovation or entrepreneurship, a big idea they want to explore, or a desire to learn new innovative skills to apply to living, learning, and succeeding in ways that matter to them.

 

This program is open to both undergraduate and graduate students, regardless of academic concentration.

 

First workshop:

Resilience for Innovators with Brendan Ozawa-de Silva

Develop the resilience you need to persevere in your innovative work.

 

When you attend this workshop, you will: 

  • Participate in an experiential introduction to the neurophysiology of resilience
  • Learn how to incorporate practical body-based tools for resilience and well-being into your everyday life and work 
  • Creatively explore the potential of innovation to contribute to interpersonal, social, and cultural resilience 

Brendan Ozawa-de Silva, PhD, is an Associate Teaching Professor at the Center for Contemplative Science and Compassion-Based Ethics at Emory. His research focuses on the scientific study of compassion, empathy and other prosocial emotions and their cultivation in educational, carceral, and other settings.

Tenure Track Assistant Professor position at Agnes Scott

 

We are looking for someone who can teach some combination of the following courses: Epidemiology, Biostatistics, Health Policy, Environmental Health, Environmental and Health Communications, and Program Evaluation - along with courses in their area of expertise. Of these, Health Policy and Environmental Health are the most important. 

 

Faculty at Agnes Scott must demonstrate excellence in teaching, research and service - but of these, teaching is the most important. Thus, prior teaching experience is essential for candidates for this position, ideally at the undergraduate level. Candidates must demonstrate a commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion, and to liberal arts education. 

 

The salary and benefits for this position are completely covered by the college (hard money) with no requirement to bring in external grants to cover salary, though faculty are certainly encouraged to apply for research grants.

Emory’s only university-wide mentorship program looks to collaborate with the Laney Graduate School to provide mentorship to Emory undergraduates interested in pursuing graduate education. Our mission is to provide resources for undergraduates and build supportive mentor-mentee relationships to help students of all backgrounds develop professionally. 

 

We are currently looking for graduate school mentors interested in participating.

 

Mentors could be current students as well as alumni, and would meet with undergraduate mentees 2-3 times a semester to discuss topics in the curriculum.

Tips and Strategies for International TAs new to the U.S. Classroom

 

**An extension of TATTO, offered by Laney’s Office of Professional Development and the English Language Support Program.

 

Graduate students who are new to the US higher education classroom environment may have unique questions or concerns about what to expect in their role as a Teaching Assistant. This session will be led by experienced international TAs from across the disciplines who will share their perspectives and advice. The goal of this session is for participants to develop a firm understanding of the skills needed to ensure greater success with serving as a TA in the US classroom. Participants will learn what to expect in the US classroom culture as well as strategies for communicating as a TA with Emory students, specifically useful phrases for asking and answering questions, asking for clarification, and giving feedback. This session is designed specifically for TAs who are new to the US educational context.

ELSP Monthly Workshop Series presents:

Vocabulary building for professional oral communication

Vocabulary building has generally been applied to academic and professional writing. But what about in academic and professional speaking? Speaking fluently does not necessarily equate with speaking professionally with accurate word choice. 

In this 2-part workshop, you will identify the level of exactness in your current speech and begin substituting and adding more precise vocabulary. You will begin to build your repertoire of precise vocabulary by learning to use corpus-based tools to gain awareness of appropriate professional vocabulary; using the Academic Word List; analyzing formal, academic language; and creating your own vocabulary log.

You will learn words and phrases to describe your research and explain your data; express levels of certainty when making claims; convey your perspectives; and propose solutions. Since acquiring new vocabulary requires repeated use in meaningful context, in part 2 of the workshop, we will put your skills and knowledge to use with discussions and presentations of your work, as well as discussions of topics of general interest. Between the two sessions, you will have the opportunity to submit practice recordings or scripts and receive feedback.
