LGS Award Nominations are Now Open! 

 

Nominations are now open for this year’s LGS awards cycle. These awards celebrate the alumni, faculty, staff and students whose contributions exemplify the mission of the James T. Laney School of Graduate Studies to "promote discovery and enduring knowledge by preparing innovative, thoughtful leaders in research, scholarship, teaching, and practice in service to the global good".  
 
We invite you to nominate individuals whose scholarship, service, mentorship, and/or community impact deserves recognition. Your submissions help us highlight the remarkable work taking place across the LGS community and ensure that outstanding achievements receive the visibility they merit.

Showcase Your Research: 3MT® Competition & Master’s Showcase

 

Are you interested in sharing the significance of your research with a wider audience, strengthening your communication skills, and expanding your professional network? If the answer is yes, consider applying to participate in Laney Graduate School's Three Minute Thesis (3MT®) Competition and LGS Master's Showcase, an academic competition and showcase in which graduate students deliver a compelling presentation to a non-specialist audience in three minutes or less. 

 

Who is eligible? 3MT competitors must be PhD students in the candidacy stage. Master’s Showcase participants must be LGS master’s students. 

 

Why should you participate? 

  • Share your work and its impact with a wider audience 
  • Enhance your ability to communicate research to a non-specialist audience  
  • Refine your public speaking and presentation skills 
  • Expand your professional network 
  • Gain media exposure - finalist videos are posted to Laney's YouTube Channel and winners are highlighted in Laney publications 
  • Be a part of a growing professional community

Applications Now Open! Start Your Science and Technology Policy Career 

 

Applications for the California Council Science & Technology Policy Fellowship are now open. As fellows, scientists, engineers, and social scientists spend one year in Sacramento working as staff in the State Assembly, State Senate, a State Agency, or Offices of the Governor.  

 

Fellows get a front-row seat learning about the craft and process of policymaking in the State of California — a dynamic arena that often sets policy trends for the United States and the world. 

 

Application deadline: 11:59 p.m., PST, March 2 

 
Eligibility: Applicants must hold a PhD in science, social science, or engineering by Sept. 15, 2026, and be a U.S. citizen or have a suitable work eligibility status. 

 

Compensation: $68,640, paid-time off, health, dental, & vision benefits, reimbursements for professional development and relocation application  

 

Materials: Resume/CV, statement of purpose, two letters of recommendation  

 

Career Paths: Following the fellowship, graduates of the program work in a variety of careers in state and federal government, at nonprofit institutions, academic institutions, federal laboratories, and more.
