Ramin Ahmadoghlu is a Professor of American Government at Georgia Gwinnett College. Ramin earned his PhD in 2016 from the University of Cincinnati, Department of Political Science. His dissertation, “Nationalism, Secularism, and Islam: Azerbaijani Turks in Azerbaijan and Iran,” examines the transnational interactions of ethnic nationalism, secularism, and religion by chronicling the shared history, culture, and religiosity of two Northwestern Iranian communities with conflicting political practices and priorities: the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Iranian Azerbaijan. Ramin’s research interests both build upon and extend beyond the topics explored in his dissertation. Ramin’s work continues to engage with the national and international politics of ethnicity, nationalism, and religion in the Middle East, the Caucasus, and Central Asia. Inspired by his doctoral research and activism, Ramin endeavors to take a closer look at Turkish immigrants, refugees, and diaspora politics. As a Visiting Scholar with the Vulnerability and the Human Condition Initiative, Ramin intends to use vulnerability theory to interrogate U.S. immigration law and policy through the experiences of Turkic minority communities in the United States.
