Garang Buk Buk (2020) launches crowdfunder to support the Community Resource Center he founded
Garang (MDP 2020) came to the United States in 2018 to pursue a dual Master’s in Development Practice and Master of Public Health at Emory University. While here, Garang has connected with Books for Africa and collected two metric tons of books with the help of colleagues and friends for the Haddonfield Community Resource Center which he founded in his hometown of Aweil, South Sudan.
What began as a bench became a small library. Garang built the library himself and brought books from Kenya over a number of years, where he was pursuing his secondary degree. His vision is to expand the library to a community center, leveraging the assets of his community to address its educational (among other) needs. A key focus of the library is girls, who often stay at home instead of going to school. Garang hopes to provide them a safe place to read and learn, prepare them for formal studies, and provide college sponsorship.
With the support of Bianca Patel (MDP 2020) the Haddonfield Community Resource Center will soon launch a crowdfunding campaign with the hopes of raising $10,000 to for transportation of books from Atlanta, Georgia, reconstruction of site, and expansion of center.
