As part of the Applied Development course series, MDP is offering “Building Inclusive Markets”. This 5-session class introduces students to market-based approaches to development so that as practitioners they can confidently participate on interdisciplinary teams to create solutions with market-based actors and principles. The course will cover topics including the theory of markets and development, financial inclusion, market systems development, market in crisis, and social entrepreneurship and impact investing.

The course is taught by Patrick Kelley and Scott Merrill, both of whom work at the Terwilliger Center for Innovation in Shelter at Habitat for Humanity International. As the Vice President of the Terwilliger Center and the Global Senior Director of Programs, respectively, Kelley and Merrill bring experience in applying market-based solutions for improved and affordable shelter. This includes program design, implementation, monitoring and evaluation. Kelley comments, “This is my sixth year teaching the Inclusive Markets course. I really enjoy getting to know the Emory grad students and the new ideas they bring each year. I feel I learn as much from them. The thinking on inclusive markets changes a lot, and preparing for the course keeps me on my toes.”
