Course Spotlight - MDP 514R: Statistical Modeling for Development
As a part of the Applied Development series, MDP 514R: Statistical Modeling for Development will be offered Spring 2020. This 1-credit course will be taught by celebrated Rollin’s School of Public Health Faculty Julie Clennon, PhD, MSc. Dr. Clennon specializes in Disease Surveillance, Global Health, Infectious Disease, Safe Water, Sanitation and Hygiene, Remote Sensing, Spatial Analysis/GIS, Vector-borne/Zoonotic Diseases, Disease Ecology, and Veterinary Public Health, bringing a unique and interdisciplinary approach to development to the classroom.
This course builds on basic statistical tools established in MDP 516 Quantitative Reasoning, focusing on quantitative methods to analyze and interpret data for the students of Master’s in Development Practice. This course will survey intermediate-level statistical models to teach students how to choose appropriate statistical models, conduct them, and interpret them.
Topics covered in this class will include: Data types & databases, Excel vs relational databases, Types of ANOVAS & non-parametric testing, Linear Regression Methods, Data Reduction Methods: Principle Components Analysis (PCA) and clustering, Count-based Models (Poisson Regression, zero-inflated models), Logistic Regression along with data coding and post-hoc testing, Other Categorical Outcome Models, Generalized Linear Mixed (GLMM) Models, and Time Series Analysis. We are excited to offer Statistical Modeling for Development in Spring 2020.
