Who is the Emory Global Development Student Council?

Who is the Emory Global Development Student Council? Good question! Glad you asked…

“The Emory Global Development Student Council was founded by graduate students in the Master’s in Development Practice program to create a platform for interdisciplinary engagement in both international and domestic development issues. We plan and facilitate a number of events on campus, such as film screenings and panel discussions, to raise awareness and discussion of some of the world’s most pressing issues. We also engage in local development issues by volunteering with a number of Atlanta area organizations.” Click here for more information.

This small group of MDP students is self-organized around the goal of making the experience as an MDP student fit their needs by advocating to the Laney Graduate School about what the particularities of the MDP experience. The nomination process is unique; all students are included on the ballot, unless they opt out, instead of asking for nominations. The current board, Ian Hamilton, Sarah Holman, Arielle Nelson, and Angela McIntosh, is currently trying to realign with the core objectives of GDSC. Angela McIntosh says, “In the past GDSC seems to have aspired for a campus-wide reach and focused on raising awareness and discussion of international issues”, however, after falling inactive after 2016 the current executive team has focused on reviving the council. McIntosh excitedly says “and this year we have had lots more ideas than we’ve had the time or money to plan”.

Scheduled events include Dialogue with Dr. Laura Emiko Soltis, Freedom University over her work with the Coalition of Immokalee Workers (interracial migrant farmworker movement in Florida), her experience of translating PhD training at Emory into human rights praxis on the ground, and reflection on her personal perspectives on migration and social justice, in addition to a panel and mixer with MDP alumni, grant-writing workshop, and bowling.

The next executive board will be announced early next month – stay tuned for more greatness!
