Career Overview: I am a practicing emergency medicine physician and medical epidemiologist trained in global environmental health. My clinical research interests include the effects of heat, disaster preparedness, health system preparedness and energy use, and extreme events. My public health research interests include the health effects of climate change, particularly adaptation activities for disasters, global health impacts, and other aspects of the public health response; and energy scarcity and the health system impacts of fossil fuel dependence. I serve as the medical officer of the Global Climate Change Program at CDC's National Center for Environmental Health and as a consultant in the NCEH Global Climate Change Program.
Areas of Interest/Research:
Global Health
Health Policy
Public Health Preparedness
Selected Research Projects:
My current research is focused on evaluating acute morbidity and mortality associated with weather and climate; global health adaptation to climate change, particularly in relation to disasters; and fossil fuel dependence in health systems and the health impacts of transitioning to novel energy sources. I also work on sustainability in Emergency Medical Services and other health care systems.
