Biography

Photo of Muadi  MukengeMuadi Mukenge brings over 18 years of program leadership, grants management, and communications experience in the fields of international philanthropy, women’s rights, and global health and development.  She has managed annual budgets of over $2 million as a grant-maker and implementer of social change initiatives in Africa, provided technical assistance and facilitated training for grantees, coordinated evaluation projects, and led regional convenings.

Currently, at Emory University, Mukenge leads a PEPFAR-funded initiative that aims to improve HIV care for pregnant women, and children, via capacity-building of nurses and midwives in 14 African countries. It is joint CDC-Emory initiative in which Mukenge oversees grants, convenings, technical assistance to grantees, and health facility assessments to improve health systems and the quality of HIV service delivery.

Previously, Mukenge served as Program Director for Sub-Saharan Africa at the Global Fund for Women, where she expanded grantmaking to conflict regions, Francophone Africa, and rural women’s networks, and was an active participant in donor collaboratives. Mukenge frequently advises donors on their Africa programs and is a frequent commentator on development trends in Africa and U.S. foreign policy toward Africa, and is active in African Diaspora and international human rights initiatives. She has contributed chapters to edited volumes as well as written opinion pieces. Mukenge previously worked at the Pacific Institute for Women's Health (Los Angeles), Coro Southern California, and the African Studies Center at UCLA, where she earned a master's degree in African Studies with a political science concentration. She is originally from the Democratic Republic of Congo and serves on the Boards of Priority Africa Network and the Congolese Studies Association. Previously she served on the Boards of the African Studies Association, New Field Foundation, and Gender Action.
